Paper Elegance

Once a man punished his 3-year-old daughter for wasting wrapping paper. Nevertheless, the child brought him the gift:  “This is for you, Daddy.”  Even though embarrassed by his overreaction, his anger flared again when he found the box empty. The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes: ”Oh, Daddy, it is not empty. I blew kisses into the box...”

Brimming with imaginary kisses the salvaged and intricately folded multiple layers of white paper  are carefully constructed to juxtapose the smoothness of the box against the distressed paper bows.

Small Gift Box: The box measures 3.5 cm x 3.5 cm x 1.5 cm with the bow measuring an additional 6 cm diameter x 3 cm high Medium Gift Box: The box measures 5.5 cm x 5.5 cm x 3 cm with the bow measuring and additional  5 cm x 3 cm x 2.5 cm including two 5 cm ties. Large Gift Box: The box measures 7.5 cm x 7.5 cm x 3.5 cm with the bow measuring an additional 8 cm diameter x 4 cm high.

Care instructions: Multiple folds and layers make the paper sturdy enabling the gift box to handle mild pressure. Handle and store with care and avoid contact with water. In case of contact  with water set aside to dry at room temperature.

Materials: Recycled paper salvaged from the bin of a local retailer and the odd spot of glue. Available in lino print limited color edition ranges.

Paper Brooches

I was reminded of the intrinsic value of things while working with the incredible artisans of Mozambique.  This led me on a journey of rediscovery, of looking at what we discard, neglect and take for granted, which led me to a bin filled with used paper, which rejuvenated through the ancient art of origami, and cured with a contemporary creative catalyst, became delicate objects of beauty; reminders of a life well lived.

Bow: Don't forget to be awesome. - The Green Brothers (5 cm x 4.8 cm x 0.8 cm) Butterfly: Refuse to settle for anything less than butterflies. - Sarah Jessica Parker (4.5 cm x 5 cm x 2.5 cm) Heart: Life is about using the whole box of crayons. - RuPaul (5 cm x 6.8 cm x 0.5 cm) Leaf: If you're feeling blue - try painting yourself a different color. - Hannah Cheatem age 8 (5 cm x 3 cm x 0.2 cm) Lily: The earth laughs in flowers. - Ralph Waldo Emerson (5 cm x 5 cm x 5 cm) Peace Crane: If you think you are to small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito. - African Proverb (5.5 cm x 7 cm x 2.5 cm) Rose: Be bold or italic. Never regular. - Unknown (4 cm x 4 cm x 1.8 cm) Box: Brooches come packaged in a hand folded recycled paper origami box (7.5 cm x 7.5 cm x 3.5 cm)

Care instructions: Multiple folds and layers finished with several eco-friendly top coats make the paper sturdy enabling the brooches & gift boxes to handle mild pressure. Handle and store with care and avoid contact with water. In case of water contact set aside to dry at room temperature. Gently wipe with a soft, water moist cloth to clean.

 Assemblage Cake Stands

Cake Stands: A readymade assemblage of contemporary objects juxtaposed with leaves and flower blooms the Cake Stands denote a bohemian lifestyle of accumulated & stacked beauty in a new African aesthetic. Think collage culture with a tinge of haberdashery rituals. The obviously hand folded frayed shapes and colored patterns attempt to imitate the tactile matter but remains playfully undone.

Materials: Readymade assemblage, leaves, flowers, raw silk, string, Powertex ((an environmentally friendly, non-toxic, highly versatile, water-based weatherproof textile hardener).

African Rope Folding Chair

Shinda is the Shona word for rope. Be it recycled sacks. Upcycled bark. Repurposed leaves. Or reclaimed tyres. Africa’s rope is as diverse. As its sustainable design. And its peoples. This OOAK upcycled car tyre chair evokes the effeminate force of craft. Turning a pollutant into salvaged chic. Hours of dedication. And patience. Are knotted. And woven into this intricate piece.
